What is a parlay?
A parlay bet combines multiple bets on different outcomes, such as teams or totals, into one single bet. To win, all of these bets have to be correct. Circled games and propositions (props) or future bets cannot be parlayed.
While parlays offer the chance for big payouts, they're also riskier because if even one bet is wrong, the whole parlay loses. So, they're popular for the potential reward but also known for their high risk.
To estimate your potential parlay payoffs, follow these steps:
For example, if you bet $100 on a two-team parlay featuring the Angels -150 and the Angels game under 8 (-120), you can calculate your winnings as follows:
1. Calculate the Parlay Factor for each bet:
- For positive odds, simply add 1 to the odds: 1.50 + 1 = 2.50
- For negative odds, calculate the reciprocal, multiply by -1, and add 1: 1/1.20 = 0.83 + 1 = 1.83
2. Multiply the factorstogether, then multiply the result by your bet amount to estimate your total return (including your bet):
- 2.50 x 1.83 = 4.57
- 4.57 x 100 = $457 (total return)
3. Subtract your bet amount to calculate your winnings:
- $457 - $100 = $357 winnings
This method also applies to parlays involving more teams, simply repeat the steps. Keep in mind that this provides an estimate; actual payouts may vary slightly due to rounding.
In case of a tie or no action, the parlay will reduce to a lower-level payout, except in a two-team parlay, where a tie results in a straight bet.
